History of Shadow Mountain Community Church
Who is the founder of Shadow Mountain Church?
David Paul Jeremiah, the founder, and host of Turning Point for God and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, was born on February 13, 1941, in Toledo, Ohio. He was one of four children of James and Ruby Jeremiah. James T. Jeremiah, David’s father, served as a pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church when they moved to Dayton, Ohio during his childhood. Later, in 1953, they relocated to Cedarville, Ohio, after his father became the President of Cedarville College, now known as Cedarville University.
As David grew up in a pastor’s household, he was exposed to ministry from a young age. During his final year at Cedarville College, he felt a calling to full-time ministry, and after earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963, he married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson. They relocated to Dallas, Texas, where David studied at Dallas Theological Seminary and received his Master’s degree in Theology in 1967. He later obtained a Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981 after completing additional graduate work at Grace Seminary.
In 1969, David and Donna initiated a church plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with seven families attending. He served as the pastor at Blackhawk Baptist Church for twelve years, and during that time, the church expanded to 1,300 members. Blackhawk Christian School was established, and The Bible Hour television program was launched.
In 1981, David, Donna, and their four children relocated to California after he was appointed as the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church. It is now one of the most significant churches in San Diego county, with eight satellite locations serving Hispanic and Arabic congregations. The church’s principal campus in El Cajon, California, is home to Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools, a Christian school district spanning kindergarten through twelfth grade across multiple sites.
After settling in California, David Jeremiah was led to continue the broadcast ministry he began in Fort Wayne. In 1982, he launched Turning Point for God with a local television program in San Diego, which soon expanded to include Turning Point Radio. What began as a local program has grown into an internationally recognized ministry, with Turning Point Radio and Television programs reaching audiences across the globe, including Canada, the UK, the Middle East, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, India, the Philippines, China, and Spanish-speaking countries. The ministry has received numerous awards and has been recognized for its impact in spreading the Gospel.
