History of United Family International Church
Who is the founder of United Family International Church?
The United Family International Church (UFIC) was established as an interdenominational ministry in Harare, Zimbabwe in late August 2008, initially as a lunch hour prayer group. The group utilized the Anglican Cathedral Hall along Nelson Mandela Avenue, but due to overwhelming response, moved to the State Lottery Hall at the corner of Rezende Street and Robert G. Mugabe Way in Harare. Even this larger hall became too small, with people overflowing and following proceedings from under the footbridge that crosses over Julius Nyerere Way linking L. Takawira and Innez Terez streets. Consequently, the ministry was relocated to the City Sports Center, which remains the main place of worship for UFIC. Pastor Emmanuel Makandiwa, who had been a pastor in the Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM), founded the church and is regarded as a highly charismatic young pastor.
In 2011, the church commenced construction of a 30,000-seat temple in Chitungwiza, which was inaugurated in 2022 and is expected to have an attendance of 35,000 people in 2023. Some of the miracles attributed to Prophet Makandiwa, including raising the dead and enabling a barren woman to conceive and deliver within three days, have been controversial. Additionally, reports have surfaced that gold and diamonds miraculously appeared in congregants’ pockets and handbags, while miracle money was deposited in bank accounts and pockets of followers attending service. While the authenticity of these “miracles” and “prophecies” remains a topic of debate among Zimbabweans, it is apparent that prophets like Makandiwa consider their functions and mandates to be biblically authenticated.
