There are roughly 14 million Baptists in Nigeria, most of whom are affiliated with churches under the Nigerian Baptist Convention (NBC), an umbrella organization that grew out of missionary work begun in the 1850s by the American Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
Nigerian Baptist Convention is a Baptist Christian denomination, affiliated with the Baptist World Alliance, in Nigeria. Rev. Dr. Samson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle is the president. The headquarters is in Ibadan, Nigeria.
The Nigerian Baptist Convention has its origins a foreign mission of the Southern Baptist Convention of the United States of America in 1849 with the appointment of Rev. Thomas Jefferson Bowen as the first missionary to the country.
He arrived in Badagry area of the current Lagos State on the 5th of August, 1850. The Nigerian Baptist Convention was officially formed in 1914. It has started other Baptist conventions in West Africa notably in Ghana (now the Ghana Baptist Convention), and in Sierra Leone, now the (Baptist Convention of Sierra Leone). In 2016, it had 13,000 churches and 7,000,000 members.

By 1950, “Africanization” of the church was well underway and Nigerian Baptists assumed prominent roles in the majority of congregations, schools, and organizations, which included leadership of the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
1950 also marked the first year that the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary began granting degrees, which helped to meet an immense need for Baptist pastors in Nigeria.
