History of International Central Gospel Church (ICGC)

Who is the founder of International Central Gospel Church (ICGC)?

The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) was officially inaugurated as a church on the 26th of February 1984 in Accra, Ghana, under the visionary leadership of Dr. Mensa Otabil. The humble beginnings of the church started with just about twenty people gathered in a small classroom for the first meeting.

Over the next two years, from February 1984 to April 1986, the membership steadily grew to approximately one hundred and eighty (180) adults who regularly attended the church. During this period, the church had to move its meetings to various facilities, including classrooms, private residences, public halls, science laboratories, mechanical workshops, and even a cinema theatre.

In May 1986, the church found a home in a rented Norge scout hall, known as the Baden Powell Memorial Hall, where it stayed for the next decade. During this time, the membership of ICGC skyrocketed to over 4,000, and the church embarked on aggressive missionary church planting activities, establishing local assemblies in major towns and cities in Ghana, as well as planting churches in Europe and the United States.

The first congregation that was established in February 1984, now known as the Christ Temple Assembly, has directly planted over forty other churches in the Accra-Tema metropolis of Ghana alone, showcasing the remarkable growth and impact of ICGC.

In 1988, ICGC established a ministerial institute to train a new generation of leaders who would carry forward its vision. What started as a six-month certificate in ministry has now evolved into the prestigious Central University College, which is renowned as a premier private-owned university in Ghana.

Furthermore, in 1988, the church introduced an educational scholarship scheme called Central Aid, aimed at providing financial assistance to needy students in pre-tertiary educational institutions. This program has grown to become the largest non-governmental scholarship initiative for pre-tertiary students in Ghana, reflecting ICGC’s commitment to education and social impact.
