Banfield when he arrived in Nigeria at Tsonga, now in Edu Local Government Area, in 1905. The church has over 23 districts, and a reputable theological college. UMCA is a Product of Faithful missionaries of Jesus Christ that came to Nigeria under the umbrella of United Missionary Society (UMS). On September, 29th 1955, the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) became a corporate body under the land perpetual succession ordinance cap 107 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with registration number 427.

Who is the founder of the United Missionary Church of Africa?
United Missionary Church of Africa was planted in Nigeria when the first missionary named Rev. A. W. Banfield arrived in Nigeria at Tsonga, now in Edu Local Government Area, in 1905.
He came under the umbrella of United Missionary Society (UMS). Through this society, Nigeria was fortunate enough to have up to seventy-four missionaries between 1905 and 1948.
The missionaries laboured relentlessly and their effort was blessed with the formation of UMCA in 1955. On September, 29th 1955, the United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) became a corporate body under the land perpetual succession ordinance cap 107 of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with registration number 427.
The Nigerians who came to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour labored alongside the missionaries to advance the work of God through UMCA in such various ministries as evangelism, church planting, primary and secondary education, theological training and medical centers. Among these distinguished Nigerian personalities were late Rev. D. O. Taylor (first UMCA ordained minister), late senior Pastor Andrawus Nama, late Rev. Nathaniel Jiya and late Senior Pastor Abel Kolawole (a pioneer missionary to Nupe land). With zeal, vision and initiatives they directed the work under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Lord blessed their efforts and the church was growing from strength to strength.
On January 5th 1978, in a handing over service held at UMCATC Chapel, UMCA became an independent, indigenous church with its headquarters at Ilorin. The UMS no longer made decisions for UMCA. The church’s first indigenous administration had the following officers: Rev. Jacob Bawa Salka (now Prof.) as the first President; Late Rev. Samuel Adebayo Oloyede, General Secretary; and Rev. James T. Harman (now Doctor) as the Treasurer/Vice President, and the Principal of the UMCA Theological College. The church had four districts, each with a Church District Superintendent; Hausa District – Rev. Sule Magaji; Nupe District – Late Rev. Peter Kolo Audu; and Yoruba Kwara District – Late Rev. Joseph Adeyanju Adeyemi; Yoruba Southern District – Rev. Simon Adeyemi Adedokun.
From that time on, the church continued to witness rapid growth and now has twenty-two districts. It is now a vibrant, growing Holy Spirit–led church that belongs to the worldwide fellowship of Missionary Churches.

The United Missionary Church of Africa (UMCA) is a mission-oriented ministry and as such it seeks to reach the unreached. There’s no obvious statement on the church site but their statement of faith and beginning deduced that they are focused on winning and establishing souls in God.
United Missionary Church of Africa Belief
- M.C.A believes in the triune God as God, self existent, personal, immutable and eternal being. She believers that God is the creator and sustainer of the universe (Psalm 139:7-10); Malachi 3:16)
- M.C.A believes in the Bible, consisting of the sixty-six (66) books of both the old and new testaments (II Tim. 3:16; I Peter 1:25)
- M.C.A also believes that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and therefore was lost and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. (Gen. 1:27; Acts 4:12; Rom. 3:23).
- M.C.A believes in Jesus Christ as the only begotten son of God. He is fully God and fully man, his true teaching and perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world, his death on the cross; his bodily resurrection from the dead and his intercession (John 1:19; 3:16; Tiles 2:13; Hebrew 4:15).
- M.C.A believes in the Holy Spirit as the third person of the God head and that through his illumination, conviction and regeneration, men are brought to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ; his continuing work of sanctification in the lives of believers; and their divine preservation onto eternal life (Acts 1:8; Rom. 10:9-10; Gal. 2:13)
- .U.M.C.A believes in the universal church as a body composed of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ who have been called out from the world, separated from sin and virtually united by faith to Christ, her head and sovereign lord. In the local church as an organized body of believers who are joined together and who meet at regular times for teaching the word, fellowship of the saints, observation of the ordinances of baptism and Holy communion, administration of discipline and love, prayer and participation in public worship and worldwide evangelism, and in the divinely given ministers of pastors, evangelists, preachers, missionaries, teachers and deacons (Acts 6L1-6; Eph. 4:11-13).
- M.C.A believes in the physical second advent of Christ which is the hope of the church, the source of her encouragement, consolation, and up-building for purification, holiness and inspiration for activity and service; the resurrection of the body and final judgment of all men, the eternal perfection and blessedness of the saved, and the eternal punishment of the lost (John 14:1-3; I Thess. 4:13-18; Heb. 12:5-8; Rev. 21
